Canada is escalating its racist attack on migrants & refugees
Prime Minister Carney’s first bill, Bill C-2, is a racist anti-migrant, anti-refugee bill. C2 puts more money into border control and makes it harder for migrants to enter and remain in Canada. While Carney rode into power claiming to fight Trump, C2 is a mirror of the anti-migrant violence, raids, kidnappings and deportations in the US.
For the past year, Canada has quietly expanded its deportation machinery: already, every day over 3,000 people are being made undocumented. These are our friends and neighbours fearing deportation daily and with very little so-called legal rights. Families from Gaza fleeing Zionist genocide and Sudanese families displaced from the EU/UAE-backed counter-revolutionary war are being denied family reunification.
Now, Bill C2 will:
- Prevent majority of migrants from making refugee claims
- Expand the (Un)Safe Third Country Agreement, Canada’s border wall with the US
- Hugely expand powers for deportations including by revoking immigration status
- Increase surveillance and policing against all people in Canada, not just migrants!

This is happening as Canada continues to arm Israel and Canadian mining companies plunder lands around the world. Canada is spending over $50 billion a year on cops, borders, surveillance and military. Healthcare, housing and education is being eroded, but corporations are getting tax breaks and fast tracked permits for resource extraction on Indigenous lands.
Imperialist countries like Canada forcibly displace millions through colonialism, occupation, war, economic devastation, and climate change, and then make it impossible for people to seek safety. Canada’s border policies are a part of a system of global apartheid as powerful countries escalate border enforcement internally while outsourcing border militarization.
The EU has built Fortress Europe through twenty years of border outsourcing. Today, the EU is fast-tracking deportations and expanding detention centres in non-EU countries in the Balkans, Turkey & North Africa. The Mediterranean is a landscape of EU violence; in fact, part of the route of the Madleen Freedom Flotilla is the world’s deadliest route for migrants.
The US has been pushing its border deep to Central America, with border outsourcing agreements with Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, and others. Most recently, Trump gave a $6 million bribe to El Salvador to ship hundreds of Venezualan migrant detainees to the notorious CECOT torture camp. Australia is most notorious for setting up abusive offshore detention centres on Nauru and Manus Island in Papua New Guinea for the past thirty years.
“The act of undocumented migration in the face of the capitalist-imperialist crisis and hyper-militarised borders is in itself a powerful form of resistance.” -Corinna Mullin
